Sweetheart Pincushions

Sweetheart pincushions are needlework inspiration with
an appropriate history for Valentine's Day, 2014.

These heart-shaped pincushions were made by British soldiers
recovering in hospitals during World War I.

2014 is the 100th anniversary of the Great War.

Perhaps we will see some exhibits featuring these collectible pieces.

  1. They are amazingly made, especially if you consider this was probably occupational therapy and made by men who had probably only shortly before learnt how to sew on a button.
Do you know if there's any significance in the wheel motif?

  2. Wonderful examples and love the embellishing work on them.

  3. They were probably kits and someone probably determined some easy to sew designs for novice stitchers, which may be why there are so many wheels.
I love the idea of stiching a photo to a heart shaped pincushion.
